  • Well, unfortunately, I think I am going to have to revert back to using gmail again. I am unable to afford Proton Mail suite unfortunately. I had thought about maybe using my own email server, but if I ever need to shut that down then that won’t be a good option. I don’t plan on it, but things change. So it would be nice to get a good free one that is secure.

If anyone has any good suggestions, please let me know. I’m not sure what I should do. I am going to go with Bitwarden, and can do the 10 dollars a year for the premium, which it will be nice to have an authenticator built into that program.

So I will need to figure out the email and will probably go back to nordvpn for that part of it. If i remember right, it was fairly cheap per year.

@Madchatthew The main issue (for me personally) here is that whilst Gmail is pretty secure, providers such as (Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo) will scan or track your emails. Proton is not cheap, which is what puts me off using it to be honest.

Have you considered using standard email but encrypting it with something like PGP?

This is one of the reasons I would like to get away from them in regard to email. Probably the main reason. Not that I have anything to hide, it is just, my communications is none of their business.

Yeah, that is why I will need to stop using Proton. They do have a free tier but you have to make sure you clean our your emails and download emails you want to keep because the storage isn’t very much.

When you say standard, do you mean running email off of my own server and then implementing PGP?

Yes and no. The email doesn’t need to be on your server, but you’d need an email client that supports PGP (for example)

For example, Thunderbird has OpenPGP support

@phenomlab So would this mean if I accessed my gmail email through the thunderbird client that when I send and receive email that thunderbird would encrypt it so gmail couldn’t read it?

Now that I think about that, the mail still goes through their servers so I would think they would be able to read it on their end?

@Madchatthew No, only the end recipient with the decryption key would be able to read an encrypted message

    This is a useful read

I have an update regarding this. They both said that they are getting used to navigating Fedora and that it is working great for them so far. They said there is still a bit of a learning curve they are going through but overall happy.

@phenomlab I will have to test this out in my virtual environment. I have an Arch KDE Plasma install in virtualbox that I am testing a bunch of things out before I actually wipe the hard drive and install linux. I am currently in the process of copying my Arch test web server over to virtualbox on linux to make sure that it works. This is the virtual server that I test updates on before updating the production server. I can’t remember the error I was getting but I think it had to do with the network device. That was on the virtualbox side. So the cloud storage will be the next thing that I test.

@phenomlab this looks very nice as well. It is nice that they keep the KDE Neon a rolling release so you will get those updated apps even though Ubuntu isn’t a rolling release. Is it a rolling distro? KDE neon is rolling for KDE software. The Ubuntu base OS is not, but certain packages will be updated as needed to support KDE software requiring newer library versions than what is provided by Ubuntu. Apps from the main repositories are not rolling either, and therefore can be up to two years old. Users are encouraged not to use them, and to instead get apps from Snap or Flatpak using KDE’s Discover app store. In neon, Discover is set up to only show apps from these sources, filtering out apps from the repositories.

@phenomlab said in Proton launch password manager: will charge for it no matter if you have the full-blown package like I have. If they offered a discount or another incentive, I may well have taken a different view, but to me, it just seems like easy revenue. Much like Surfshark do, they are owned by the same company now and you can tell, there’s always something extra cropping up like dedicated IPs, loads of discounts thrown your way which is fair enough but I don’t think you should have to them thrown at you constantly . Fortunately Proton have kept things simple and have all products under one roof should you buy the right package.
